Retired coach. Emergency manager. Educator. Meet the 2020 CVCC Hall of Fame inductees

Chattahoochee Valley Community College has announced the three people who will be inducted into the CVCC Hall of Fame this year:

  • Retired men’s basketball coach Richard Mahone was selected for being distinguished in athletics.
  • Russell County commissioner Chance Corbett was selected for being a distinguished alumnus.

  • And the late administrator Ricky Huffstutler was selected for being distinguished in service.

The 2020 class will be inducted during the annual dinner March 12.

A confidential committee of CVCC employees and community members selects the inductees from the nominations, Myya Robinson, the college’s public information officer, told the Ledger-Enquirer.

CVCC’s news released listed the following accomplishments for each inductee:

Richard Mahone

Mahone coached the men’s basketball team for 15 years, compiling a 341-138 record before retiring in 2019.

He was named as the Alabama Community College Conference Southern Division Coach of the Year four times.

After graduating from Carver High School, he played for Fort Valley State University, where he still holds the single-game scoring record of 47 points.

Mahone coached at Spencer, Columbus and Carver high schools, then was an assistant at Columbus State University before coming to CVCC.

He earned his bachelor of science degree in health and physical education from FVSU and his master’s degree in health and physical education from Georgia Southwestern State University.

Chance Corbett

Corbett serves on the Russell County Commission as the representative for District 6, comprising the unincorporated communities of Seale, Dixie and Crawford. He also is the emergency manager and associate director of campus safety and security at Auburn University.

He previously worked as a deputy for the Russell County Sheriff’s Office and directed homeland security and emergency management for the county.

Corbett continues to serve as a reserve sheriff’s deputy, a certified peace officer, a paramedic and a volunteer firefighter.

He graduated from Russell County High School, earned his associate’s degree in criminal justice from CVCC and his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and his master’s degree in education from Troy University.

Ricky Huffstutler

Huffstutler worked for 17 years at CVCC. His roles included dean of administrative and financial services, dean of instruction and director of the extended day and community service programs.

He helped develop academic programs in practical nursing, radio/television production, broadcast technology, word processing, childcare, banking and finance technology.

In the community, Huffstutler served as president of the Phenix City Rotary Club and helped the Adult Drug Court, Family Dependency Court and the Juvenile Drug Court receive state funding.

Fundraiser

CVCC’s annual Hall of Fame dinner is a fundraiser for scholarships in addition to a celebration of the inductees. The event has raised more than $300,000 in six years, according to the college.

“It is such an honor for us as an institution to recognize and celebrate these individuals,” CVCC president Jackie Screws said in the news release. “We pride ourselves in providing a quality education and great service to our communities, and these exemplify this high standard. What better way to honor our inductees than by also helping future graduates who have a need.”

The event also features a silent auction. Among the 40-60 items available for bid in past years have been international trips, spa packages, original art and sports tickets.
