17-year-old arrested in January homicide at Warren Williams Apartment Homes

A 17-year-old turned himself on Thursday after a warrant was issued for his arrest in early February.

Columbus police issued a warrant on a murder charge for Derick Jones on Feb. 4, believing him to be involved with the shooting death of 50-year-old Dorian Gibson.

The incident occurred just after 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Warren Williams Apartment Homes near the intersection of Wynnton Road and 10th Avenue. Charles Newton, Muscogee County deputy coroner, pronounced Gibson dead at 6:46 p.m.

Gibson died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to Newton. This incident was the first of two that happened on the same night.

The second shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. in the 800 block of 32nd Avenue.

Officials sent out a tweet about the incident around 7:46 p.m. Friday and later revealed that one person was killed in the shooting, a 13-year-old boy, Jamareion Davis. Jaquayvius Jones, 19, was arrested on Jan. 23 in connection to that incident.

According to a press release, Jones’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8 a.m. Feb. 22, but will be rescheduled to 9 a.m. Feb. 26.
