The Cottonmouths are back for one night. What fans need to know about hockey team return

The Columbus Cottonmouths dissolved years ago, but the Snakes are taking the ice again this weekend.

Prior to the Columbus River Dragons’ Throwback Night game against Carolina Saturday at 6:05 p.m., the Cottonmouths Legends team will take on the Fort Benning Hockey Club.

Doors will open at 3 p.m. and puck drop for the Legends game is at 4 p.m. Doors remain open with no building clear-out leading in to the River Dragons game.

Entry into the Legends game will require a ticket to the River Dragons game dated March 7 and only the west side of the building will be open for seating during the Legends vs Benning game.

Here is the roster for the Cottonmouths Legends:

  • Andrew Loewen
  • Tom Maldonado
  • Tim Green
  • Jean-Alain Schneider
  • Marcel Richard
  • Tom McMonagle
  • Jerome Bechard
  • Doug Mann
  • Mike Martens
  • Levi Lind
  • Ryan Rutz
  • Derek Marchand
  • Carlyle Lewis
  • Sam Bowles
  • Ian Vigier
  • Brad Prefontaine

After 21 seasons of professional hockey, the Columbus Cottonmouths suspended operations in 2017. The official announcement was anticipated for several months after Cottonmouths owner Wanda Amos announced that the club would cease operations if a buyer could not be found.

An attempt to bring in another hockey franchise failed after the Cottonmouths shut their doors. New York City businessman Fidel Jenkins attempted to replace the Cottonmouths with the Columbus Burn in the Southern Professional Hockey League. However, Jenkins’ application was terminated by the league

The Cottonmouths had played in Columbus since 1996.

The Columbus Council voted in late April 2019 to enter into a five-year agreement that would bring hockey back to the city. That ultimately paved the way for the River Dragons, who recently clinched a playoff spot and sit 4th in the FPHL’s Western Division with an 18-19 record.
