Former longtime principal of Muscogee County school dies at 86

A retired educator who served as principal for more than three decades in the Muscogee County School District has died.

Donald B. Caldwell Sr. of Midland died June 28, according to Charles E. Huff’s International Funeral Home. He was 86.

According to his obituary, Caldwell was an educator in MCSD for 43 years, including 32 years as principal of the now-closed Cusseta Road Elementary School. In the 1960s, he taught health sciences at Spencer High School and was principal of the now-closed Second Avenue Elementary School.

Caldwell also served St. James AME Church, where he was treasurer and a steward.

The viewing, July 6 from 2-5 p.m., at the funeral home, will require social distancing to lessen possible spread of COVID-19. The funeral, July 7 at 11 a.m., will be private but available to the public via livestream on the funeral home’s Facebook page.
