Former pastor of St. Anne Catholic Church in Columbus dies at 67
Fr. Jeremiah “Jerry” McCarthy, who served at St. Anne Catholic Church in Columbus for five years, died Thursday at his home in Savannah.
He was 67 years old.
McCarthy served as pastor at St. Anne from 2013 to 2018. He celebrated his 40th priesthood anniversary in June 2018.
McCarthy had battled pulmonary fibrosis and cancer for the past couple of years, according to a statement posted on Facebook by St. Anne Catholic Church.
“Please join the St. Anne Church and St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School family in praying for the repose of the soul of Fr. Jeremiah McCarthy,” the church said in the post. “... May he rest in peace knowing all the good he did and the lives he impacted.”
McCarthy was born on May 14, 1953, and baptized on May 25, 1953, in County Cork, Ireland. He attended elementary school at Caheragh National School, then attended De LaSalle High School and University College in Dublin. He attended seminary at All Hallows in Dublin from 1971 to 1978, and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Savannah by Cardinal Thomas O’Fiaich on June 11, 1978.
He also held positions on the College of Consultors, Council of Priests, Priests’ Personnel Committee and Clergy Welfare Committee.
