Columbus area schools, colleges that have canceled activities due to Tropical Storm Sally
The following Columbus area schools and colleges have canceled activities due to the predicted heavy rain and potential flooding from Tropical Storm Sally.
Muscogee County School District
The Muscogee County School District will be physically closed Thursday but will conduct virtual instruction for all students, MCSD announced in a news release Wednesday.
“Parents should prepare each student to report online for instruction at his/her regularly scheduled time,” the news release says. “If any households experience circumstances that cause student absence due to the weather patterns (e.g. power outages, flooding, etc.), we encourage parents to notify each student’s school administrators and teachers.”
All MCSD after-school activities scheduled for Thursday are canceled.
“In-person instruction, per the choice model, will resume during the regular schedule, September 18, 2020,” the news release says..
Monday was the start of MCSD’s first phase of reopening in-person classes after school buildings were closed in March and instruction was conducted only online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Harris County School District
The Harris County School District has canceled all operations for Thursday due to expected severe weather from Tropical Storm Sally.
“On Thursday morning the weather is expected to be such that it will prevent us from safely conducting morning bus routes and school arrival routines,” Dr. Justin Finney, assistant superintendent of business services and technology, said in an HCSD release. “We are in a flash flood watch and we have been told to expect 5-8 inches of rain in a 24-hour period and gusting winds up to 35 mph.”
School buses cannot operate in environments exceeding 35 mph, Finney said, and the district also expects to see downed trees and power lines.
HCSD will send future updates through calls, emails and texts, as well as its website and Facebook Page (Harris County School District - GA) and local media outlets.
Chattahoochee County School District
All after-school activities scheduled for Thursday are canceled, ChattCo superintendent Kristie Brooks told the Ledger-Enquirer.
In-person classes still are planned to be conducted. But if any family keeps their child at home and still participates via online, they won’t be marked absent, Brooks said.
Phenix City Schools
All Phenix City Schools will conducted all classes remotely Thursday, superintendent Randy Wilkes told the Ledger-Enquirer on Wednesday. But all extracurricular activities will go on as scheduled, he said.
Russell County School District
All classes in the Russell County School District will be conducted remotely Thursday, RCSD announced in a news release Wednesday.
All RCSD extracurricular activities scheduled for Thursday have been canceled.
Troup County School District
All Troup County schools and offices will be closed Thursday, according to a release from the district. The district will also not require a virtual learning day due to not knowing if families in the district will have power to use technology.
St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School
St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School will be closed Thursday for on-campus learning and will conduct classes virtually, the school announced in news release Wednesday.
Columbus State University
CSU announced the following changes to Thursday’s operations Wednesday night:
- All classes will meet virtually; there will be no in-person classes on campus.
- The campus will be closed to the public.
- On-campus staffing will be limited to essential personnel; all other employees should work remotely and consult with their supervisors for clarification, if necessary.
- The library, rec center and similar services will remain closed for the day.
- Shuttle services will resume at 3 p.m.
- Dining services will remain available as normally scheduled.
Columbus Technical College
Columbus Technical College has canceled all in-person classes and events that were scheduled to start after 5 p.m. Wednesday, CTC announced in a news release.
The campus will be closed Thursday.
Chattahoochee Valley Community College
Chattahoochee Valley Community College canceled all on-campus activities starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday and continuing through Thursday, the school announced in a news release.
Georgia Military College
Due to a power outage, all day classes at the Columbus campus of Georgia Military College have been canceled for Thursday.
“We will make a decision regarding night classes at 5 p.m.,” GMC said in its news release.
