One person killed and firefighter injured in two-story house fire in Midtown Columbus

One person is dead after a house fire at 1601 14th Ave on Friday morning after Columbus Fire and EMS responded to the scene.

Val Almonord, 37, was pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m., according to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan.

Five Columbus fire units responded to heavy fire and smoke when the call came in around 10:20 a.m., said Columbus Fire Marshal John Shull.

The two-story structure fire occurred about a mile southwest of Columbus High School, and Ladder Truck 6 doused the two-story building as it partially collapsed.

A firefighter was injured by thermal burns while fighting the blaze.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

On Thursday morning, another fire claimed a home on 3rd Avenue. There were no injuries but officials are still investigating, Shull said.
