Columbus Fire and EMS respond to fire at Buckhead Steak & Wine. What we know so far
Columbus Fire and EMS responded to a fire at Buckhead Steak and Wine Wednesday morning, blocking off a section of Armour Road.
The first few calls came in at 9:35 a.m., battalion chief Sam Bush told the Ledger-Enquirer. The cause of the fire is currently unknown because it was “fully involved” when first responders arrived, he said.
An arson investigator was on the scene conducting interviews and taking samples to determine the cause, Bush said. Those results will be turned over to fire chief Salvatore Scarpa.
When Bush got to the restaurant, there were heavy flames and smoke coming from the backside of the building, he said, and a ladder fire truck was set up in the front of the building. Not long after Bush arrived, the fire began spreading towards the front and right side of the restaurant.
“It just started collapsing,” he said.
As far as Bush is aware of, there were no individuals inside the building during the fire.
By around 11 a.m., firefighters had put out the fire, Bush said.
The section of Armour Road that was blocked off will be open again soon after they remove all but one fire truck, he said. The remaining truck and firefighters will be watching for hotspots in the building, Bush said.
“We’re going to have hotspots all night,” he said. “With a fire this big, usually they will pop up somewhere.”
Bush advises Columbus residents to not stop and look at fires when they see them while driving. When vehicles run over the hose they can cause damage to the hose, which can’t supply water. He also advises onlookers on foot to stay as far away from the fire as they can.
“Don’t stop,” he said. “Don’t run over the hose. Try to get away from it.”
