Columbus National Infantry Museum named best history museum in country by USA Today

If you love history and you are traveling through Georgia soon, we’ve got the perfect museum for you to visit.

The National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center is a must-see in Columbus. In fact, it is the best history museum in the country. Just ask the folks at USA Today.

A team of the newspaper’s editors and several experts hand-picked history museums from all over the country, then allowed readers to vote for the best of the bunch. The top ones made it on USA Today’s 10Best list. And Columbus’s National Infantry Museum claimed the top spot.

So, why was this museum chosen as the best?

In the museum, there are more than 1,800 historical artifacts, 36 immersive installations and 42 monuments showing the journey of the American Infantryman. The Global War on Terrorism Memorial, the Last 100 Yards Ramp, Hall of Valor and World War II Company Street are just a few of the ways to see the journey unfold.

In addition, the museum offers several unique simulations.

Visitors can see if they have what it takes to be a solider in the DownRange Combat Simulators and new Paradrop Simulator. In this simulation, you will either ride or fly along with other soldiers and cover-fire. There are several other virtual reality simulations such as Sky Dive, Black Hawk and a simulated shooting range.

There have even been weddings at the National Infantry Museum. That’s right–the museum doubles as a beautiful venue space. There’s a chapel and courtyard for ceremonies, as well as other gorgeous spaces for receptions. The museum can also be booked for other events such as retreats and private parties.

Plan your visit to the National Infantry Museum. The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free into the museum, but donations of $5 per person are encouraged.
