A Columbus road will soon be safer and nicer looking thanks to funding received from the Safe Streets and Roads for All program.

Columbus will receive $1 million as part of $800 million in grant awards for 510 projects announced on Feb. 1 by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. This is the first round of funding under this new program.

Henderson said the million dollars will help safety on South Lumpkin Road with the installation of sidewalks for pedestrians. He said this will also serve as a beautification project for an area that’s on the doorstep of Fort Benning.

“We’re extremely grateful for the opportunity to help build our infrastructure and continue to make Columbus a place where people really want to live and work,” said Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson.

The program was established by H.R. 3684 passed in 2021 with $5 billion in appropriated funds over five years.
