A 3-year-old landed in the hospital Friday for a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the child gained access to a firearm while riding in a car in Phenix City, according to police.

Phenix City Police say they responded around 9:15 p.m. , Friday, to the area of Crawford Road and US Highway 280 to reports of a person being shot.

Police say it appears that the child was riding in the back seat when they gained access to a firearm and discharged it.

The child was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional and has since been taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, police say.

Phenix city police said Monday the child’s injuries were life-threatening but the child is stable and showing signs of improvement.

It is unknown if the child is a boy or a girl.

The Phenix City Police Criminal Investigations Division has begun the investigation which is still ongoing.
