Fire off Tenth Avenue in Columbus possibly caused by explosion, fire department says
A fire currently blazing off of Tenth Avenue in Columbus possibly started due to an explosion, according to a Columbus Fire & EMS spokesperson.
The fire department is working to acquire an “airport fire apparatus to extinguish the fire.” Chief John Shull said these devices are used to extinguish aircraft fires and can carry a variety of extinguishing agents.
Shull said an investigator is on scene and that the cause has yet to be determined. The fire is currently contained.
Fire officials are asking people to avoid Tenth Avenue south of Cusseta Road and north of Victory Drive.
A truck from Fort Moore recently arrived on the scene.
Shull said that no injuries have been reported.
Fire Chief Sal Scarpa said the department got a call from 911 dispatch around 8:30 p.m. of an explosion and fire.
Scarpa said that upon arrival they found several piles of recyclables burning.
There is no danger to the community, according to Scarpa.
