Columbus police officer involved in morning rush hour shooting on Manchester Expressway
An officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning in Columbus has left one person injured, according to the Columbus Police Department.
No officers were injured during the incident, according to police.
Police said the incident occurred around 8:05 a.m., Wednesday, on Manchester Expressway.
The person shot has been taken to a local hospital and is still alive, according to police.
One person near the scene, Cindy Conner, was inside a building where she works at Safe Guard Forms and Systems Inc., on Coca Cola Boulevard, when she heard shots. She automatically went outside to check after hearing approximately between 10 or 12 gun shots.
“I didn’t see the shooting, we just heard it. You know that sound, you knew immediately what it was.”“So, I immediately stood up and went outside.”
She looked across the street to Manchester Expressway and saw two police officers cautiously approaching a vehicle. Later on, she saw police pull a person out of a vehicle, while more police cars and an ambulance arrived on the scene.
“The guy, he’s in the car, two policemen are behind him, they have their guns drawn.,” Conner related. “About the time they pull him out you just see the cop cars lining up.”
Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting along with the Office of Professional Standards, according to the department’s Facebook page.
The eastbound lanes of Manchester Expressway, from Miller Road to Beaver Run Road, were still closed due to the ongoing investigation as of 12:30 pm., according to the post.
Police are asking people to avoid the area for their safety and to help facilitate the investigation process.
Both officers are on administrative leave with pay pending the conclusion of the investigation, according to police.
