Kitty and Charlie Key, two LaGrange sisters, will get the chance to represent our area when they appear on the latest season of the singing competition show, American Idol. Their turn in front of the judges will come after several rounds of auditions and years of performing both together and separately. They’ll make their American Idol debut as Kit + Char, which is also the stage name they use here in the local Columbus music scene.
In fact, you can find them performing this Saturday, March 16, at Banks Food Hall where they will likely be singing some of their favorites from fellow female country artists, like Kelsea Ballerini and Grammy-nominated artist Cam. They particularly love Cam’s song “Diane” and likewise choose songs that feel “empowering for women,” but, as Kitty remarks, “there’s nothing like sister harmony.”
From the Columbus music scene straight to American Idol
Although they are quite the formative duo, Kitty submitted their tape without Charlie’s knowledge, and the initial call back came as a pretty big shock to both of them. The singers are under strict rules to keep the details secret. Their episode of the show could possibly air as soon as March 17, although their American Idol episode is just as likely to debut the following Sunday, after a local performance at Highside Market here in Columbus.
Both women have backgrounds in entertainment and developed their love of singing when they were little girls and have continued to pursue their dreams. Kitty graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theater from Point Park University in Pittsburgh and Charlie recently competed in the Miss Georgia pageant as Miss Georgia’s Teen.

Kit + Char plan to spend Sunday evening with their extended family just like they spend every Sunday evening. Parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, and some cousins will all be crowded around the television with hopes of seeing two of their own.
