Upgrading security for the main gate at Fort Moore means folks are being advised to use another route to enter and exit the U.S. Army post adjacent to Columbus for approximately the next six months.

Phase 1 of the upgrade at Plumley Access Control Point on Lindsey Creek Parkway/I-185, which has five inbound lanes and two outbound lanes, will start June 6 with the closure of the ramp from I-185 South onto Custer Road. This closure is expected to last until June 28.

The northbound exit ramp is scheduled to close during Phase 2, from June 29 through July 28.

Instructions for motorists to adapt to Phases 3 and 4 will be announced later, according to Fort Moore’s news release.

During these closures, the Sand Hill Access Control Point, which normally is open from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, will have extended hours until 8 p.m. The Sand Hill gate has two inbound lanes and one outbound lane.

Other options for Fort Moore access are at these gates:

  • 8th Division Road and Harmony Church, five inbound lanes and two outbound lanes open 24/7.
  • Eddy Bridge, two inbound lanes and one outbound lane open 24/7.
  • Legacy Way, four inbound lanes and two outbound lanes open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Buena Vista Road, one outbound lane open 24/7.

Although the main gate will continue to be open 24/7, Fort Moore spokesman Joe Cole told the Ledger-Enquirer, the Army post encourages motorists to use other gates to avoid traffic delays and increase safety during construction.
