Elderly woman raped and robbed in Phenix City home

An 81-year-old woman was raped and robbed this morning in her Phenix City home.

Police were called to a residence on Summerville Road about 10:30 a.m. and discovered the woman bound to a chair, said Phenix City Police Capt. Jim Hart. The victim had been outside her home when a man approached and forced her back inside, where he sexually assaulted and robbed her, Hart said. She was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Columbus for treatment.

Investigators believe the attacker, described as black and average stature with a noticeable scar on the left side of his face, fled in a dark green Mercury Marquis with Alabama tag number AR71237.

Hart said police were called to the home by a neighbor who had seen an unknown man in the vicinity of the victim's home. The neighbor became suspicious and called 9-1-1.

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to call Phenix City Police at 334-448-2836.
