Suspect in rape, robbery of 81-year-old woman arrested in Phenix City

Phenix City police have made an arrest in the case of an 81-year-old Phenix City woman who was raped and robbed at her home Tuesday morning.

Police arrested Javarous Jermaine Hall, 18. of Smiths, Ala., about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at his house at 108 Lee Road 537, Phenix City Police Capt. Jim Hart said. The arrest was made with the assistance of the Lee County Sheriff's Department.

Hall has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, rape, robbery and sodomy and is being held at the Russell County jail. Bond is set at $200,000 for each offense.

Police were called to the woman's residence on Summerville Road about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and discovered her bound to a chair. The victim had been outside her home when a man approached and forced her back inside, where he sexually assaulted and robbed her, Hart said. She was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Columbus for treatment.

Police were called to the home by a neighbor who had seen an unknown man in the vicinity of the victim's home. The neighbor became suspicious and called 9-1-1. The attacker fled in a dark green Mercury Marquis with Alabama tag number AR71237.
