Dove hunters across Georgia will kick off the new hunting season at noon Saturday (Sept. 1).
The dove season is traditionally considered the kickoff of the state's fall hunting season. Doves are the no. 1 migratory game birds harvested in the nation. The dove season runs Sept. 1-15, Oct. 6-15 and Nov. 22-Jan. 5.
Hunters are reminded that they must obtain a free Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program permit before hunting any migratory birds this season. HIP is an annual federal program that requires hunters who pursue doves, ducks, geese, rails and other migratory birds to complete a short harvest survey and in return receive a free participation permit. A Georgia hunting license also is required.
