Columbus man foils robbery attempt, shots fired

A 33-year-old Columbus man was shot at early Thursday morning by a would-be robber.

Tyrene Covington told police a man in his early to mid-20s tried to rob him in front of his 3700 Bridgewater Road apartment around 2:20 a.m., police said in a report.

Covington had just parked and was getting out his car when the assailant walked up with a handgun, possibly a Beretta. The man was described as 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, 150 pounds, low haircut and wearing a white tank top and dark baggy knee-length shorts.

Covington tried to grab the gun, then the suspect fired three shots as Covington fled toward his apartment. Covington wasn't injured. A witness told police he saw two men get into a new model Honda Accord and drive away in an unknown direction.
