Three young men have been arrested on assault charges after a Columbus Police Officer was shot in the leg early today during a burglary in east Wynnton.
Patrick Knight, 38, a five-year member of the police force, was treated and released from the hospital after he was shot around 1:50 a.m. during a burglary at 2330 Schaul St., said Police Lt. Vince Pasko. The resident of the apartment, Darwin Snelling, was not home at the time.
Police later arrested three Columbus men in connection with the burglary and assault: Blake Harris, 19; Michael Day, 21; and Lonnie Toombs, 21. All are charged with aggravated assault, burglary and possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime.
Pasko said Knight went around to the back of the building where he was shot by a gunman who was inside the apartment. The bullet passed through the officer's left leg, but he is home and doing alright, Pasko said.

Neither Knight nor two other officers who responded to the call fired their .45-caliber semi-automatic pistols. The SWAT team also was called out to the apartment but they discovered the apartment empty.
