Washington home tour halting soon

Because of renovation, The Oaks, home of Booker T. Washington at Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site, will be closed to tours beginning on Oct. 1. The closure is expected to last from nine months to one year.

The renovation will include work on the first and third floors of the home.

A town hall meeting to discuss the renovations will be Thursday night from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 P.m. CDT at the Tuskegee City Complex.

Washington lived in the home from 1900-1915. It is one of the centerpieces of the historic district on the Tuskegee University campus.

The George Washington Carver Museum will remain open.
