Academic center collecting umbrellas

The Academic Success Center in Muscogee County is sponsoring an umbrella drive for students.

“Our students must cross the street from the Academic Success Center to the Teenage Parenting Center cafeteria to eat lunch, come rain or shine, daily. Students returning to class in wet clothes are not able to concentrate on school work. They are physically uncomfortable and this has a negative impact on learning,” Principal Marietta Webb said in a press release.

The center hopes to collect 320 umbrellas, which will supply each teacher with 18 umbrellas for their classroom.

Umbrellas can be dropped off at the center on 1112 29th Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Academic Success Center is a nontraditional academic alternative school which helps high school students complete academic requirements and apply vocational training.

Those who complete graduation requirements while they are enrolled at the center receive a high school diploma from their regularly assigned school and may participate in the commencement exercises at that school.
