The Russell County Commission has appointed Assistant Russell County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Kathy Russell as acting director with the resignation of Director Chance Corbett.
The county commission accepted Corbett's resignation Tuesday during the commission meeting, expressing regret at his departure but support for his new position as associate director of Emergency Management at Auburn University. Corbett's last day is Nov. 9.
"I just want to say Mr. Corbett, you've been a great asset to Russell County and I thank you for an outstanding contribution to the county," said Commission Chairman J.D. Upshaw. "The shoes are going to be hard to fill."
Russell will get the first shot. The timetable for finding a replacement for Corbett is open-ended, with the acting director receiving her current salary for the first 60 days.
