Columbus man killed in wreck

A Columbus man died in a one-vehicle accident early Wednesday after his pickup truck left the roadway on River Road and struck a utility pole before hitting a pine tree and coming to a stop.

Fred Wayne D'Armond, 57, of 665 Double Churches Road, was pronounced dead at the scene about 2 a.m. by Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Victoria Thompson. The body has been sent to the State Crime Laboratory in Atlanta for an autopsy, Coroner Bill Thrower said Wednesday.

D'Armond was traveling south on River Road about just south of the intersection of River Road and Green Island Drive when the red 2004 Dodge Ram pickup truck left the roadway, crossing Cascade Road and striking a utility pole in front of 5733 Cascade Road, a Columbus Police report states.

The truck then continued until it struck a pine tree at 5715 Cascade Road, where it came to rest. Columbus Fire & EMS received the call about the accident at 1:26 a.m. The truck was extensively damaged. The report shows that the body was extricated from the truck.
