New DVD highlights: 'Once," 'Stardust'

Among all of today's new DVD releases — "Underdog," "Halloween," "The Simpsons Movie," and yet another re-release of "Blade Runner" — a couple of lesser-known gems are hiding.

"Once" confounded people who stepped in having heard it was a musical. It's not, in the purest sense. The tale of an Irish street busker and his unlikely romance with a young woman is filled with music, sure, but it's music that lead actors/musicians Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova perform, in natural settings, in the film. It's a wonderful and unexpected film, made for a nickel and worth the purchase price.

"Stardust" is also a romance, under the guise of a fully realized fantasy. Claire Danes and Charlie Fox will keep you rapt -- until Robert DeNiro enters to steal a few scenes. Michelle Pfeiffer also gets to chew up some scenery.
