A fire that damaged a barber shop and T-shirt shop at 807 and 809 14th St., Phenix City, caused significant damage to the rear of the building as well as smoke damage to the entire building Monday.
Phenix City Fire Marshal, Battalion Chief Kris Kennedy said the department received the call at 8:05 a.m. and that firefighters had it under control by 9:13 a.m., though they remained on the scene until noon.
"The rear of the building was more involved," she said. "There was a garage area behind the building, with a vehicle inside the building. We believe it started with the vehicle, but the cause has not been determined. We believe it was accidental."
A passerby apparently spotted smoke or flames and called authorities, she said. No one was in the building and there were no injuries.
Kennedy did not have an estimate of damages.
