Russell training site open to public

The Russell County Sheriff's Department's new training facility in Fort Mitchell will be open to the public from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. EST on the second Saturday of every month beginning on March 8.

The training facility is located near Fort Benning's Eddy Bridge gate and the Uchee Creek Recreation Area on the Alabama side of the post. It was built in an old sandpit owned by Phenix City businessman Johnny Dudley.

The facilty is surrounded by Fort Benning and Uchee Creek and was constructed through the use of inmate labor from the Russell County Jail supervised by George Worthington. The facility cost only about $35,000.

A firearms instructor will be on site during the public days. Visitors must bring their own firearm and ammunition. Targets will be available for a minimal charge if you do not have your own. Contact Sgt. Darryl Powell at 334-298-6535 with any questions.

The remaining public training days in 2008 are April 12, May 10, June 14, July 12, Aug. 9, Sept. 13, Oct. 11, Nov. 8 and Dec. 13.
