CSU's golden moment

Frank Brown, president of Columbus State University, leads the applause in recognition of the class of 1960, the first to graduate from the university. Students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered Thursday for Columbus State University's Opening Day Ceremony to begin celebrating the university's 50th anniversary.

At left, Mayor Jim Wetherington, left, Bo Callaway, chair emeritus of the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation, and Marlene Melvin, Columbus College's first student government president, watch the unfurling of a banner bearing the names of 20 faculty and staff and 31 students who attended Columbus College when it opened its doors in the old Shannon Hosiery Mill in 1958.
