A single vehicle accident in Opelika early Tuesday morning left one person dead.
At around 6 a.m. the Opelika police department responded to a single vehicle accident on Interstate 85 between West Point Parkway and Columbus Parkway.
Upon arrival, officers observed a 2005 International truck off the roadway in the wood line on fire.
According to a witness, the 18-wheeler was travelling south in the outside lane of traffic, when it left the roadway, crashed into several trees and burst into flames.
The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m. by Deputy Coroner Gene Manning.
The identity of the driver has not been released. The body was sent to the Medical Examiners Office in Montgomery for an autopsy.
