Dead infant found in Opelika ditch

An infant child discovered in a rain drainage ditch behind an apartment complex in Opelika, Ala., Monday morning was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m. CDST by Lee County Coroner Bill Harris.

The case is being treated as a homicide, Capt. Allan Elkins with the Opelika Police Department said Monday.

Opelika police responded to a call at 9:04 a.m. that the infant had been discovered behind the 200 building at Tree Top Apartment Complex, 2908 Birmingham Highway.

The body is being transported to the medical examiner's office in Montgomery to determine age and cause of death, Elkins said. He said no other information is being released about the infant.
