Alexander observes voting in Phenix City

"People have been coming in and out all day," said Dorothy Alexander of Phenix City. "People seem to be in a voting mood." Alexander has been observing the voters all day from her chair underneath an oak tree in front of the Russell County Courthouse.

She's been reading her Bible and handing out guide ballots to those interested. She's been helping with the Alabama Democratic Conference for "many, many years."

The yellow piece of paper is a sample ballot with the Conference's choices in the Democratic primary. The choice is Hillary Clinton.

"I just hand these out," she said. "I don't talk about the choices. They won't let me too close to the polling place."

Behind her next to the street were several signs for Republican candidate John McCain.
