PC schools honor businesses

Two local businesses were honored last month by Phenix City Schools during the system's annual Heart of the Community Awards.

Publix Supermarket received the Partner-In-Education of the Year Award and MeadWestvaco received a Special Recognition Award for their contributions to Phenix City classrooms.

Teachers, support personnel and volunteers were also recognized during the January 26 ceremony.

Awards were presented to the following individuals:

--Elementary Teacher of the Year: Kristi Miller, Lakewood Elementary School

--Secondary Teacher of the Year: Gypsy Cook, Central High School

--Classroom Teacher of the Year: Alice Cornett, Ridgecrest Elementary School

--Speciality Teacher of the Year: Courtney Cooper, Lakewood Elementary School

--Rookie Teacher of the Year: Rebecca Petty, Phenix City Elementary School

--Administrator of the Year: David Jones, Principal, Phenix City Elementary School

--Support Employee of the Year: Loretta Baber, Lakewood Elementary School.

--Food Service Employee of the Year: Shirley Sparks, Phenix City Intermediate School

--Transportation Employee of the Year: Robert Tolbert, Lakewood Elementary School

--Maintenance Employee of the Year: Tommy Jones, Phenix City Intermediate School

--Volunteer of the Year: Kim Knox, Lakewood Elementary School

--Community Member of the Year: Artie Wiley, Continental Carbon Company.

--Clifford S. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award: Florence Bellamy, Phenix City Board of Education.
