Former Columbus Mayor Frank K. Martin's first novel, "SOWEGA: A Tale of Southern Justice," will be in bookstores Thursday. It can also be purchased online at AuthorHouse.com
The novel tells the fictional version of a 1968 civil rights murder trial in Southwest Georgia. In the book, Robert Lee "Jackpot" Jest, a young black man, is defended by Clay Garland, a young white indigent defense lawyer.
Jest is charged with the murder of a local sheriff's grandson. Garland takes the case after no other defense attorney would agree to defend Jest.
The book is $24.95 in the soft-cover version; $36.99 for the hardcover.
