The second annual "Lakewood on the Green," an amateur golf tournment sponsored by Lakewood Elementary School, will tee off on Feb. 23.
The golf tournament is a fundraiser for the school, the science magnet for the Phenix City School System. The school is located off Silverlake Drive adjacent to Lakewood Golf Course.
The tournament, which tees off at 11 a.m., is a three-man scramble with an entry fee of $35. It includes a kids event (ages 5-12) which begins at 10 and a variety of prizes including a grand prize of a 2008 Cadillac CTS for a hole-in-one at a designated hole. Prizes will also given for longest drive, straightest drive, closest to the hole, lowest overall score and the highest overall score.
The tournament, which brought the school more than $16,000 last year, is for amatuer players only, said Misty Grimes, a teacher at Lakewood who is one of the coordinators for the event. The money was used to purchase a variety of materials and equipment for use by the students of the school.
"We have great parental and community involvement here at Lakewood," Grimes said. "We're looking forward to having a great tournament."
Last year's event brought parents, grandparents, school board members and golfers to the event in some form of fashion. There are still sponsorships for the event available. Groups or companies can sponsor a hole on the course.
The kids event last year involved getting a hole-in-one at four holes to win a variety of prizes which included Bruster's Ice Cream or food at McDonald's, two of the school's four Partners-In-Education. Other Partners-In-Education at the school include E.C. Moore, El Vaquero's, Kiwanis, Publix, Home Depot and Valley Lanes.
