63rd Engineers prepping for deployment

The 63rd Engineer Company, a unit of Fort Benning's 11th Engineer Battalion, is on its way to the Army's National Training Center in Fort Irwin, Calif.

The three-week training period is designed to prepare the company for its first deployment to Iraq, currently scheduled for April.

Training will include repairing holes in roadways caused by improvised explosive devices. Tools of the trade are bulldozers, graders, scrapers, rollers, high speed compactors and backhoes, all of which have already been shipped to the NTC.

Though the 63rd has not been deployed to Iraq, the unit did serve a 12-month tour in Kuwait, returning to the States in November 2006.

Capt. James E. Curlee, the company commander, called the NTC experience "the best preparation the unit can get prior to deployment."

598th Maintenance Company, May; 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, June; 13th CSSB, September; 104th Transportation Company, October; 926th Preventive Medicine Detachment, October; and the 24th Ordnance Company, TBA
