The Phenix City Council voted unanimously to approve operating licenses for Gonzoe's Jazz & Blues Sports Restaurant, but not without somewhat of an admonition.
Gonzoe's, 202 Seale Road Unit B, is the successor to a similarly named club that until Feb. 2007 operated in the Phenix Plaza Shopping Center. Gonzoe's Jazz and Blues Sports Bar and Grill was closed by the city council after what police described as a series of incidents in the parking lot, overcrowding and insufficient food sales to justify its restaurant license.
Mayor Jeff Hardin asked city officials if the club, now managed by Ricky Patterson of Phenix City, had be informed of the necessity to police and control the parking area.
"I know building, police and fire and all that's been done, but managing parking lots ... has all of that been made clear," Hardin asked Gil Griffith of city Building Department.
Griffith replied that the police chief usually has a meeting with applicants to discuss the responsibilities of license holders, a process confirmed by Capt. Roger Newman of the Phenix City Police Department.
The new Gonzoe's will be a smaller venue than the Phenix Plaza site, Patterson told the Ledger-Enquirer Tuesday.
