Man gets 30 years in baby kidnapping case

One man accused of kidnapping a 1-year-old baby withdrew his guilty plea in federal court today while a co-defendant got sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Darrell Joseph was 20 years old when prosecutors say he, Riviere Marshall, 23, and Rodney Riggins, 25, kidnapped Davion Montez Peterson in 2005 and tried to ransom him for $80,000.

Joseph previously pleaded guilty to kidnapping and was scheduled to be sentenced today by U.S. District Court Judge Clay Land. The Columbus man expected to be sentenced to a range of 18-25 years — a range Land said wasn't equal with what Marshall faced.

Joseph withdrew his guilty plea because Land wouldn't accept the plea agreement. Marshall, however, was sentenced moments later to 30 years in prison for kidnapping.

Riggins was sentenced last summer to more than 33 years for his role in the kidnapping.
