Phenix Council honors student for volunteer work

The Phenix City Council recognized Stephenie McGucken, a senior at Central High School, with a proclamation in honor of her work with the Russell County Red Cross during Tuesday's council meeting.

McGucken was recently named as one of Alabama's top honorees in the 13th annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. She organized an anti-smoking campaign that educated young students about the danger of smoking, urged students to take the non-smoking pledge and worked to help create "Kicking Butts Day."

Mayor Jeff Hardin proclaimed today as Stephenie McGucken Day in Phenix City.
