Americus woman dies in head-on collision in Sumter County

A young Americus, Ga., woman who had just returned home Tuesday from burying her aunt in New York was killed in a head-on collision with another car Wednesday morning on U.S. 19 in Sumter County.

Shana Aliah Baker, 23, of 274 Ga. 30 West, Americus, was pronounced dead around 9:15 a.m. at the scene by Sumter County Deputy Coroner Buddy Wilbanks, he said.

"A witness stated she crossed the center line and struck a lady from Florida who was headed north in a Dodge Caravan van," said Wilbanks. "The drivers were the only occupants. They both had to be extricated. The Florida woman was transported to an Albany hospital."
