Jeremy Scott Mathis, charged Monday with aggravated assault in the Nov. 24 nighttime attack on a Fort Benning soldier along Broadway in downtown Columbus, waived a scheduled Columbus Recorder's Court hearing Thursday after posting a $2,500 bond and being released Monday from the Muscogee County Jail.
Mathis, 25, of Eastanollee in northeast Georgia, charged Monday with the attack on Capt. Michael Joseph Kelley, is the second person to be charged in the attack that left the soldier with a broken jaw that required surgery and a broken arm, as well as cuts and bruises.
The case now goes to Muscogee County Superior Court and is expected to be presented to a Muscogee County grand jury.
Columbus Police Lt. Lynn Joiner said police still expect to make a third arrest in the case.
