Auburn freshman remembered at memorial

AUBURN, Ala. – Members of the Delta Gamma sorority hugged each other and watched closely while a tribute video to Lauren Burk played on the matrix board at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.

With songs providing an emotional backdrop, picture after picture showed a smiling Burk interacting with her Delta Gamma sisters. Thousands of Auburn University students packed the bottom half of the Coliseum on Monday afternoon to pay tribute to Burk, who was killed Tuesday night.

“She touched each of our hearts in a special way,” said Alison Penuel, president of Delta Gamma sorority.

Burk, 18, of Marietta, Ga., was found lying along Ala. 147 on Tuesday night, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to the East Alabama Medical Center, where she died. Police later found Burk's 2001 black Honda Civic on fire in the Hinton Field parking lot on campus.

A memorial and a funeral were held for her over the weekend in Atlanta. Burk graduated from Walton High in Marietta.
