The Russell County Commission is expected to pass a resolution in opposition to an Alabama Senate bill which would authorize the local sheriff to ignore the county commission-adopted budget and spend county funds.
District 4 Commissioner Cattie Epps read a synopsis of the bill to the commission during Monday's work session and the reaction was almost unanimously against the proposal, sponsored by state Sen. Steve French, who represents Jefferson and Shelby counties.
The sheriff's departments typically makes up about 60 percent of county general fund budgets.
