The Exceptional Family Member Program has mandatory enrollment for special needs military family members. Enrollment doesn't hurt the soldier's career, but assists military personnel in considering medical and educational needs of the family members when assignment decisions are made, according to a press release.
Enrollment is necessary if the spouse or child meets the following criteria: asthma, a current or past mental health diagnosis, a high-risk pregnancy, cancer (past or present), attention deficit disorder or diabetes.
