Investigators say house fire was set

A Columbus woman who smelled smoke in her residence Thursday night discovered that someone attempted to set her chimney on fire from the outside.

Fire investigator Sgt. Kevin Nixon with Columbus Fire & Emergency Medical Services said someone attempted to set wood slats afire in a corner of the house where the chimney is located, but firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze after receiving the 8:37 p.m. call to the residence off Buena Vista Road.

Damage to the house owned and occupied by Roberta Dixson was estimated at $500 to a house worth about $100,000, said Nixon. The fire did not reach the interior.

The fire has been ruled an incendiary and remains under investigation by Sgt. Phillip Nolin, Nixon said.
