Americus teen dies of wreck injuries

A 13-year-old Americus, Ga., boy was killed Saturday when he was thrown from a vehicle during a one-car wreck on Georgia Highway 49 in Terrell County, seven miles north of Dawson.

Sergio Sandoval of 425 Arch Helms Road, died at Phoebe Putney Hospital, Albany, said Senior Trooper Garry Greene with the Americus Post, Georgia State Patrol. Sandoval was a passenger in a car driven by his mother, Jackelin Marquez, 36, of the same address, about 3:40 p.m. when she lost control of a 2002 Chevrolet Blazer on a sharp curve and ran off the road.

Greene said she overcorrected and the vehicle rotated counter-clockwise, overturning twice and coming to rest on its top in the southbound lane.

"He was thrown out at some point, striking the ground and receiving trauma to the upper torso and head," said Greene. "They were not wearing seatbelts."

His mother was also transported to the Albany hospital for treatment in the emergency room, Greene said. He said charges are pending.
