Hundreds receive free shoes for Easter

Nearly 750 children were expected to receive new shoes for Easter today at Peachtree Mall in Columbus.

The giveaway, in its 28th year, is sponsored by the Controllers Civic and Social Club, a group of retired military soldiers, and targets children in area Head Start programs.

"We saw a need to continue supporting the community after we retired," said Eddie Roberts, president of the organization.

The Controllers receive donations from the general public, local businesses, and also do fundraisers to raise the necessary money.

Children, their teachers and some parents began selecting shoes Wednesday morning at 9am.
