Orin Lincoln of Richards Middle School lasted until the fifth round in the 47th annual Georgia Association of Educators Spelling Bee.
Lincoln was eliminated on the word "prosciutto."
The championship was won in the 7th round by Cathy Deng of Hilsman Middle School in Clarke County.
She spelled the word "chrestomathy" correctly.
The runner-up was Logan Austin of Bennett's Mill Middle School in Fayette County. He missed the word "tergiversate." Deng will now go to the national spelling bee in Washington, D.C. in late May.
