Middle Georgia plays for hockey title

The Middle Georgia hockey team, which features 12 players from the Bi-City, will play Brookwood in the Georgia Student Hockey League Class AA finals tonight at 9 in Duluth, Ga.

Players from Columbus High, Northside, Hardaway and Harris County make up the majority of the 19-member team. The GSHL is made up of 22 teams competing in three classifications.

This is the second consecutive year Middle Georgia is playing for a state title. Middle Georgia lost in the Class A championship game to Peachtree Ridge last year.

After losing to Woodstock in the second round, Middle Georgia has battled back through the loser’s bracket. It knocked off Chattahoochee 7-2 before avenging its loss to Woodstock, 5-2, in the semifinals.

Northside has the most of local players on the team. Marc Gaudet, David Gilbert, Brandyn Shelley and William Robinson all play on the team.

The Columbus High players are Tyler McCrea, Travis Samsky and Andrew Shields. The Hardaway players are Ethan Williams, Bubba Jowers and Shaw Bedgood. Harris County has two players – Chad Scrimpshire and Victor Algarin.
