Popular actor visits Fort Benning

Marine Corps veteran and popular actor R. Lee Ermey visited soldiers training on Sand Hill at Fort Benning Saturday morning.

Ermey, popular with soldiers at Benning for his role as a gunnery sergeant in Stanley Kubrick's 1987 film "Full Metal Jacket", spent time observing E Company, 2nd Battalion, 54th Infantry Regiment training at Cashetown and then spent time with C Company at their company area.

Ermey is in town for the Glock Sport Shooting Foundation Match at Fort Benning, hosted by the Army Marksmanship Unit. The event has more than 300 Glock owners shooting in the pistol match. Ermey is a celebrity spokesman for the company.

Ermey spent eleven years in the Marine Corps, two as a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Ca. Ermey rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant before being medically retired for injuries received during his service. He received an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant in 2002.
