Man dead in apparent gun accident

A man is dead from an apparent accidental gunshot wound that happened Sunday night in Troup County.

James McCubbin, 47, was struck once in the chest close to 9:30 p.m. at 103 Abbey Glen Drive, said Troup County Sheriff's Lt. Rick Massie. The 12-gauge shotgun shot was being examined at the time and thought to have been unloaded.

McCubbin was pronounced dead that night by Coroner Jeff Cook.

The sheriff's office is investigating the incident. Massie said no further details are currently available.
